One could easily forget, gazing at all the autographed photos of Brigitte Bardot in her prime flooding today’s market, that the woman who defined the phrase “sex kitten” is now a senior citizen. Bardot, now 73, has long since traded in her bikinis for her life’s passion: saving animals.
Bardot made a rare appearance before Canadian reporters earlier this year, looking more like a grandmotherly version of herself than the pouty, sensual actress who stirred American men’s sexual appetites in the 1950s and 1960s. The former pin-up star flew to Canada on March 22 to plead with government officials to intervene with the bloody slaughter of seals. During her tearful appearance, Bardot said, “I am pleading with you. This will likely be my last visit to Canada before I die. I want to see this barbaric massacre stopped before I die.”
At the conclusion of the news conference, an elderly woman approached her to ask whether she could help raise awareness of the mistreatment of cats and dogs in China. “Don’t worry, I’m on the case,” replied Bardot. Then the questioner pulled out a small collection of photos and magazine covers featuring Bardot in her heyday, asking her to sign them.
